Stargazing is a fun hobby and it's easy to get started too.

Stargazing is the act of observing the night sky. Most people begin observing the sky for the fun of it. If you are just beginning to stargaze, you can start observing with nothing more than your eyes. If you decide you want a better look into space, you can buy a pair of binoculars or a telescope.

Things you should do before you stargaze for the first time

Before you stargaze for the first time, there are a couple things you should do first:
  • Visit your local library. Your local library should have plenty of books about astronomy and space. The internet is also a great place to learn about astronomy.
  • Visit a planetarium if you can. Planetariums are great places to get familiar with stars, constellations, and the solar system. Ask for a star map while you are there.

    Purchase equipment to get a better look at the night sky.

    Once you get more experience, you'll probably want to move beyond using just your eyes to observe the night sky.

    When the time comes for you to buy equipment, you'll have several options to choose from.

    Binoculars

    Binoculars are best used when you looking at very bright, large astronomical objects. With a good pair of binoculars, you should be able to see lunar craters.They also come in handy for observing nebulae and comets.

    Telescopes

    Obviously, you should buy a telescope if you want to get the best view of the night sky. When you look through a telescope, the wonders of space open up to you.

    You can see planets, moons, galaxies and nebulas with a telescope. You will be able to follow the phases of Venus, and see Mars's polar ice cap too.

    Skygazing is a fun hobby.
